Funny Basketball Moments

The first funny basketball story.

My team is playing Howards Grove. They are somewhat of a rival at our school, but mainly they are just considered the cocky school by everyone. We are playing a basketball game at home and in locker room getting ready for the game. We are all jacked up because this game is essentially for second place in conference so our coach (notorious for not being very good at inspiring speeches) comes in so we turn off the music. He then just stands at the doorway for awhile.

Then he starts flicking the lights on and off and yelling BE THE HAMMER! We have no idea what that is supposed to mean. Be the hammer, and flicking lights on and off. What is this, Kindergarten? We the players did our best not to laugh. We did go on to win the game though and that speech is still remembered. Whenever we needed to loosen up and have some fun before basketball games someone would just flick the lights and yell BE THE HAMMER!

The second funny basketball story.

I am watching the television and Bill Walton is commentating with others a LA game.

I do not remember the other commentators or who LA was playing, but this I do remember. The commentators were talking about what is was going to take for LA to win. So they are saying things like they have to pick up the intensity or they had to be able to defend the pick and roll better. That is when Bill Walton comes in. The first thing he says is that you have to play good defense. (UMM, yes, that does help you win.)

Next he says that they have to out-rebound their opponents (once again, kind of obvious Bill) Finally he says that LA must score more points than their opponents. That is when I said WHAT. If you score more points, obviously you will win. What a guy that Bill Walton is. He sure does make for some funny basketball moments. Since I love him so much, I thought I might end with some funny basketball saying from Bill Walton.

“That was the worst execution of the fast break in the history of the Trail Blazer franchise” –after the Blazers failed to convert a 3 on 1 fast break.

“What a palace this is.” –referring to the Rose Garden.

“A lot of people understand what not saying anything means, so, in effect, not saying anything is really saying a lot”
